BRATISLAVA

 

Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia. With a population of about 450,000, it is one of the smaller capitals of Europe but still the country's largest city. The greater metropolitan area is home to more than 650,000 people. Bratislava is in southwestern Slovakia, occupying both banks of the River Danube and the left bank of the River Morava. Bordering Austria and Hungary, it is the only national capital that borders two sovereign states.

The city's history has been strongly influenced by people of different nations and religions, namely (in alphabetical order) AustriansBulgariansCroatsCzechsGermansHungariansJewsSerbs and Slovaks. It was the coronation site and legislative center of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1536 to 1783, and has been home to many Slovak, Hungarian and German historical figures.

Bratislava is the politicalcultural and economic centre of Slovakia. It is the seat of the Slovak president, the parliament and the Slovak Executive. It has several universities, many museums, theatres, galleries and other cultural and educational institutions. Many of Slovakia's large businesses and financial institutions have headquarters there.

KOSICE

Košice (Slovak pronunciation: [ˈkɔʃitsÉ›]) is the largest city in eastern Slovakia and in 2013 was the European Capital of Culture (together with Marseille, France). It is situated on the river Hornád at the eastern reaches of the Slovak Ore Mountains, near the border with Hungary. With a population of approximately 240,000, Košice is the second largest city in Slovakia after the capital Bratislava.

Being the economic and cultural centre of eastern Slovakia, Košice is the seat of the Košice Region and Košice Self-governing Region, the Slovak Constitutional Court, three universities, various dioceses, and many museums, galleries, and theatres. Košice is an important industrial centre of Slovakia, and the U.S. Steel Košice steel mill is the largest employer in the city. The town has extensive railway connections and an international airport.

The city has a well-preserved historical centre, which is the largest among Slovak towns. There are many heritage protected buildings in GothicRenaissanceBaroque, and Art Nouveau styles with Slovakia's largest church: the St. Elisabeth Cathedral. The long main street, rimmed with aristocratic palaces, Catholic churches, and townsfolk's houses, is a thriving pedestrian zone with many boutiques, cafés, and restaurants. The city is well known as the first settlement in Europe to be granted its own coat-of-arms.

Comenius University is the oldest and largest university in Slovakia. It was founded in 1919 and follows the university traditions of Academia Istropolitana, which was established in Bratislava in 1465. It is named after Jan Amos Comenius, a 17th-century Czech teacher and philosopher. Comenius University has more than 30,000 students and 2,000 faculty members. As are most universities in Slovakia, it is funded mostly by the government.

Comenius University Faculty of Medicine Bratislava founded in 1919 is one of the oldest and most prestigious faculties of the Comenius University. It was the first Faculty of Medicine in Slovakia and due to its tradition and high standard of study programmes it has attracted the brightest students from all regions of Slovakia and worldwide. Currently the school offers two main study programmes: General Medicine and Dentistry, both are 6 years’ programs- doctoral studies in Slovak or in English language. Traditionally the lecturing has been in Slovak, since 1993 both programmes are offered in English focused primarily on the international students. All programmes offered by Comenius University Faculty of Medicine are accredited by the Accreditation Committee of Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic. Comenius University Faculty of Medicine ranks among the best national public institutions devoted to medical education and research. It is considered to be the opinion leader in preventive and treatment medical programmes that participate in many national and international research activities.

 

The Medical Faculty of Comenius University is a very popular choice for international students. The Medical school, school of Pharmacy, Dentistry and the Polytechnic has a multitude of foreign students from all over the world. The reason why so many students choose to study at Comenius is because of its credible study programme, the assessment system which allows you to carry over subjects to the value of 12 credits into the following year(s) and the prospects it offers to its graduates to practice internationally.

The recognition and equivalence of a Medical Degree obtained from the Medical and Dental Faculty of Comenius University, Bratislava is automatic and immediate. The official graduation ceremony is traditionally held, annually, at the beginning of July. The translation and certification process of your diploma-approximately one(1) month-is fully undertaken by TOMI SCHOOL. Hence, the new scientist, by the middle of August,has equal professional and academic rights with graduates of other European Universities and an internationally recognised degree.

After the Second World War, in successive steps, following universities were established: University of Agriculture and Horticulture, subsidiary of the Pedagogical Faculty of the Slovak University in 1947, in 1948 it was a subsidiary of the Medicine Faculty of Comenius University, University of Veterinary Medicine in 1949 and in 1952 Technical University.

By joining the subsidiary of the Medicine Faculty of Comenius University with the Philosophical Faculty accrued from the Philosophical Faculty of the Pedagogical College in Prešov, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice was established, which fastened onto the tradition of the historical Jesuitical Košice University.

In 1964 the Pedagogical Faculty with a seat in Prešov was established and became a part of P. J. Šafárik University, as well as the Faculty of Science in 1963 and the Faculty of Law in 1973. The number of faculties increased by the Orthodox Theologian Faculty and the Greek-catholic Theologian Faculty; on 1 January 1997 the P. J. Šafárik University was divided into two independent Universities, P. J. Šafárik University in Košice and University of Prešov in Prešov. So, the number of the faculties was reduced to 3, which were the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Law. From the year 1998 the University has also a new Faculty of Public Administration.

The Faculty of Medicine at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice is an institution with over 65-year long history. Faculty was founded in September 1948 and nowadays has over 12 thousand of graduates. Since 1992, Faculty has been offering medical studies in the English language to international students.Number of international students grows rapidly, there were 899 international students in 2015.

Faculty of Medicine in Košice is involved in international cooperation with other educational institutions within programme Erasmus+. Cooperation faculties are from all over the Europe. Faculty is also taking part in various international conferences, such as International Student Medical Congress Košice 2015, which attended more than 150 medical students.
